### Vocales róticas: cuando la /r/ se traga la vocal

En inglés americano, una vocal seguida de /r/ no se pronuncia por separado: las dos se funden en un único sonido rótico. No dices _bi-rd_, dices un sonido continuo en el que la lengua ya está retraída desde el principio. Por eso el americano suena tan distinto del británico.

**Cómo se produce**

- 👄 **Boca:** labios ligeramente redondeados durante toda la sílaba.
- 👅 **Lengua:** retraída desde el inicio de la vocal, no sólo al llegar a la /r/.
- 🔊 **Voz:** sonora y continua, sin corte entre vocal y /r/.

> ⚠️ **El error típico en español:** pronunciar la vocal y luego añadir la /r/ como una letra aparte. Eso parte la sílaba en dos y suena entrecortado.

### Rhotic vowels: when the /r/ swallows the vowel

In American English a vowel followed by /r/ isn't pronounced separately: the two fuse into a single rhotic sound. You don't say _bi-rd_, you say one continuous sound with the tongue already pulled back from the start. That's why American English sounds so different from British.

**How it's made**

- 👄 **Mouth:** lips slightly rounded throughout the whole syllable.
- 👅 **Tongue:** pulled back from the beginning of the vowel, not only once the /r/ arrives.
- 🔊 **Voice:** voiced and continuous, with no break between vowel and /r/.

**You hear it in:** _bird_ · _car_ · _air_ · _her_ · _more_

> ⚠️ **The typical Spanish-speaker mistake:** pronouncing the vowel and then adding the /r/ as a separate letter. That splits the syllable in two and sounds choppy.
